In a New York apartment the most valuable thing a room can do is be two rooms. A Murphy bed — designed into a wall of our cabinetry — turns a study into a guest room in one quiet movement, and back again before breakfast. Closed, there is no bed; only joinery.
We do not buy a kit and box it in. The bed, the counterbalance and the surround are designed together, so the desk stays level as the bed comes down, the shelves keep their books, and the closed panel reads as a wall, not a mechanism.
