How this estimate works.
We do not publish a flat per-linear-foot rate, and this tool does not invent one. A foot of closet is not a standard unit: ten feet of open double hanging is a very different build from ten feet of full-height doors, six drawers, shoe pull-outs, integrated lighting and a scribed top against a prewar ceiling. So the estimator does two honest things instead. It puts your room in the starting band we publish for that kind of room, and it shows which way your selections lean inside that band.

The five drivers, and how they are weighted
The lean is a weighted blend of your answers against the same five drivers we price every project by, in the order of impact the cost essay gives them. Each answer scores from nothing to full; the weights below are how much each driver counts.
- Linear feet of cabinetry — 34%. Reach-in width from 3 to 16 feet; single-sided, double-sided or island-scale for a walk-in; run length for other rooms; room count for a residence.
- Material tier — 26%. Painted, oak, walnut or exotic veneer, or a mixed palette.
- Hanging configuration & fittings — 20%. Doors count for two-fifths, interior fittings for three-fifths.
- Lighting & climate — 12%. None, integrated LED, or LED with motion and climate.
- Substrate — 8%. Drywall on metal studs, or prewar plaster and lath.
A blend under a third reads as the lower part of the band, under two-thirds as the middle, and above that as the upper. For a walk-in, one rule overrides the blend: an island, a vanity, full doors, integrated lighting and walnut or a mixed palette together describe the fully appointed room in our worked example, and only then does the estimator show $180,000–$280,000. Your borough does not move the band; building paperwork changes the schedule, and the wall behind it changes the install.
What the estimator cannot see: ceiling height (in a New York apartment, the last two feet above a builder shelf can add a great deal of storage), hardware and metalwork, stone, how square the room is, and how your wardrobe actually divides into long hang, short hang and folded. Those are what the survey is for. Compare quotes carefully, too — a number that excludes drawers, doors, lighting, delivery or installation is not comparable with one that includes them. How long does a custom closet take?
About two to three weeks for a reach-in and four to six weeks for a typical walk-in dressing room, from approved drawings. Larger, more appointed rooms take longer — the fully appointed dressing room in our worked example is a fifteen-week project — and a whole residence runs a season.
Does a co-op alteration agreement change the price?
Building rules mostly change the sequencing: alteration paperwork, insurance certificates, freight-elevator bookings and permitted work hours. What moves the price is the wall itself — prewar plaster and lath is a slower, more careful install than drywall on metal studs.
