Bay Ridge & Dyker Heights

Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, in southwest Brooklyn near the Verrazzano Bridge, have a different housing mix from brownstone Brooklyn: limestone and brick row houses, prewar co-ops along Shore Road and Fourth Avenue, and detached houses in Dyker Heights.

Limestone row houses

Row houses here often have narrow bedrooms with small closets. A full-height wardrobe wall on one side of the room, with painted doors and an oak interior, gives a family serious storage. Bay windows can be framed with wardrobe towers and a seat.

Shore Road co-ops

Prewar and postwar co-ops along Shore Road have generous apartments with water views and original closets. Custom interiors, a foyer closet rebuild and a linen closet with pull-outs make the most of them.

Dyker Heights houses

Detached houses have room for walk-in closets and dressing rooms, sometimes with an island. See walk-in closets.

Practical notes

Co-ops need insurance certificates and set work hours. In houses, plan lighting and outlets for closets during renovation.
