Two rods, twice
the rail: double-hang
closet math.

How a second rod turns five linear feet of hanging into nine and a half, the eighty-four inches of height it takes to do it, and the long-hang bay that should survive the edit.

Measure enough New York reach-ins and the numbers start to repeat like a house style: sixty inches wide, twenty-four deep, one rod at sixty-six inches, one shelf a few inches above it. Fitted out, that opening offers about fifty-seven inches of clear width — four and three-quarter linear feet of rail — and that rail is the whole closet. Below the hems, thirty inches of floor collects shoes and dust. Above the shelf, in a building with nine-foot ceilings, three feet of volume holds nothing at all. Hang a second rod and the rail goes to nine and a half feet. No wall moved, no permit filed, no square footage purchased. That is double-hang closet math in one line, and it is the least glamorous good idea in this journal.

The eighty-four-inch rule.

Two rods only work if the garments clear one another, so the arithmetic runs from the floor up. Set the lower rod at about forty-one inches: a skirt or a pair of trousers folded over the bar drops twenty-six to thirty inches, which leaves the hem roughly a foot off the floor — enough for a shoe row or a drawer box beneath. Put the upper rod near eighty-two. A shirt drops thirty to thirty-four, so its hem finishes eight or nine inches clear of the rod below, and the hanger hook stays inside the reach of most adults without a step. Add two inches for the hanger head and a shelf across the top, and eighty-eight inches of clear interior height is what double hanging really wants, with eighty-four as the hard floor. Below eighty-four the two rods begin eating each other, and the second rod stops being storage and becomes a place where sleeves are crushed.

What the building does to the rule.

In this city the constraint is rarely the room. Prewar ceilings run nine to nine and a half feet, and even the newer towers give eight. The constraint is that a closet's ceiling is almost never the apartment's ceiling: the builder framed a header over the door and plastered a soffit across the top of the box, and that soffit lands at eighty or eighty-four inches — precisely where double hanging stops being possible. We find it on most prewar surveys, and opening it back up is a day of plaster and a day of patching. Two smaller facts travel with it. Plaster over lath is not plumb, so a sixty-inch opening is often a half-inch wider at forty-one inches than at eighty-two, which is why every rod is cut to its own measurement rather than to one number; that is what the survey is for. And a steam riser in the back corner steals four inches at the bottom of the box without touching the top — a milled bay steps around it and keeps the rod above full length, where a module simply forfeits the run. Our reach-in system is drawn to what the survey found, not to what a catalogue assumed about your building. Most co-op alteration agreements want to hear about anything that opens plaster, so the letter goes in before the shop cuts a panel.

Measure the clothes, not the average.

Whether double hanging helps you is a question about your clothes rather than your closet, and twenty minutes with a tape answers it. Measured hook to hem, a shirt or blouse runs thirty to thirty-four inches. Trousers folded over the bar, twenty-six to thirty. A blazer, thirty-eight to forty. Trousers hung full length from clips, forty-four to forty-six. A day dress, forty-six to fifty-two. A winter overcoat, fifty-two to fifty-six. A gown or a full-length coat, sixty-two to seventy. The first three categories double-hang; the last four do not, at any rod height. So pull every garment longer than forty inches and lay it on the bed. That pile — yours, not a rule of thumb — is the only part of the closet that has to stay full height, and it is usually far smaller than the plan people arrive with.

The second half of the math is pitch, because rail length only becomes capacity once you divide it by the room each hanger needs. A wooden suit hanger wants about two inches to hang without shoulders touching, which is six garments to the foot. A slim flocked hanger wants an inch, which is twelve. A winter coat wants three. So the same four and three-quarter feet holds roughly twenty-eight jackets, or fifty-seven shirts, and a second rod doubles either figure — which is why swapping hangers is not a styling gesture but a pitch decision worth several feet of closet. We will not claim that a properly drawn reach-in doubles your storage, though, because some of the new rail gets spent again: one bay stays long, drawers take the folded knits off the shelf where they slump, and shoes get flat shelves instead of the floor. Netted out, the honest figure for the same opening is the forty percent we wrote about in the square-foot problem — and it is forty percent you can see, which matters more than the number.

Where long hang still earns its keep.

Long hang earns its keep, and it earns less of the closet than most drawings give it. One bay, two to three feet wide, with its rod near seventy-two inches and six feet of clear drop beneath, will take a household's overcoats, a gown or two and the garment bag. What it should not take is half the opening, which is what happens when a plan splits a reach-in down the middle for the sake of symmetry. Better still, move the outerwear out of the bedroom entirely: most New York apartments have six feet of hallway doing nothing near the door, and a shallow run of entry millwork holds coats where they are actually taken off, which frees the bedroom closet to run short hang top to bottom and keeps wet wool out of the room where you sleep. In a two-person household, give the tall bay to whoever owns the long garments rather than halving it. A closet is not a matter of fairness.

One warning about the arithmetic: two rods carry two rods' worth of weight. A four-foot rail packed with wool is heavier than anyone guesses, and the standard fix — a rod dropped into plastic sockets screwed through plaster and lath — fails the way plaster always fails, all at once, taking a fist of wall with it. In a milled reach-in the rods land in the case's own three-quarter-inch panels, dadoed and cleated, so the load runs down to the floor and the wall does nothing but keep the box from tipping. That is the difference between an accessory and cabinetry, and it is the reason we draw in 3D, mill at our own bench at 382 Canal Place in Mott Haven, and install with the crew that built the piece — never subcontracted, as it has been since 2008. What is double-hang closet math?

It is the arithmetic of rail length. A standard 60-inch reach-in with one rod gives about 4¾ linear feet of hanging; a second rod in the same opening gives about 9½. Capacity is rail length multiplied by hanger pitch — roughly 6 garments per foot on wooden hangers, 12 on slim flocked ones — so two rods double the count without moving a wall.

How much height do you need to double-hang a closet?

About 84 inches of clear interior height is the hard floor, and 88 inches lets you add a shelf above the top rod comfortably. In New York the limit is usually not the room: it is the plastered soffit above the closet door, which often sits at 80 to 84 inches even where the ceiling is nine feet.

What rod heights should I use for double hanging?

Set the lower rod near 40 to 42 inches off the floor and the upper rod near 80 to 84. Shirts, blouses, blazers and trousers folded over the bar all fit that stack. Anything measuring more than 40 inches hook to hem — overcoats, dresses, gowns, trousers hung full length from clips — needs a single long-hang bay instead.

Do I still need long hang if I double-hang the closet?

Yes, but less of it than most plans allow. Two to three feet of rail with about six feet of clear drop takes a household's overcoats, gowns and garment bag. Measure your own long garments before dividing the closet, and consider moving outerwear to entry millwork so the bedroom closet can run short hang top to bottom.
